The Jumpsuit: From Statement to Staple

The Jumpsuit: From Statement to Staple

Every year I am on the hunt for the “perfect” birthday dress to go out and celebrate. Hey, after all, I am the ultimate dress girl!

I decided the Bloomingdales Outlet will be my saving grace this year. Especially since I waited until the last minute to go shopping. In the past I have found quite a few goodies there. After getting frustrated with the dress choices available, this jumpsuit by French Connection caught my eye. It had no hanger appeal whatsoever, but still seemed interesting, so I tried it. Sidebar: always try on garments because it may look different on your body. First of all, it was black, which is the holy grail of color for me. This meant I could enjoy my cocktails and dance without worrying about the repercussions of a spill.

Second, the top half of the jumpsuit was a mesh sheer fabric with a polka dot 3/4 sleeve. Anything sheer always exudes a bit of sex appeal. Who doesn’t want to be sexy on their born day? I couldn’t remember the last time I wore polka dots, so for me it was like trying something new.

I’m telling you ladies, the jumpsuit is the way to go! I’ve mentioned jumpsuits in my previous blog posts and I stand by it being a great dress alternative. If you want to dance, twirl and dip low (ha… ha…) the jumpsuit is a no brainer. Not only will you feel sexy, but you will stand out amongst the sea of dresses. A couple of weeks ago I dressed my client Melissa in the Karen Millen tailored tuxedo jumpsuit with satin waist (1st image below). She received a last minute invitation to the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles and had to fly out the next morning. I suggested a dressy jumpsuit and after trying on a few options, Karen Millen was the most flattering choice for her hourglass figure.

When I followed up a few days later she expressed to me that not only did she have a blast, but she felt beautiful as well as comfortable, which is always the most important.

I’m glad I took the suggestion I gave my client and went against what I normally do for my birthday. I felt fantastic and honestly didn’t worry about anything. Not every jumpsuit will suit everyone. God knows I was totally against them a couple years ago, because it always seemed rather challenging to find one suitable for my height.

The good news is that they’ve become more popular in recent years. The various cuts, colors and fabrics make it easy to find one right just for you. Dressy or casual they are becoming more of a fashion staple than a fashion statement piece. Brands have been paying more attention to details making jumpsuits more appealing these last few years.

My advice to you is don’t underestimate the impact a jumpsuit can have on your next event or party. After my experience with the jumpsuit I urge you to make it a staple in your closet, you won’t regret it!
