The Cocktail Hour (Summer Edition)

Welcome to Summer! Around this time of year your inbox is flooded with various cocktail invitations. Whether your cousin's getting married or your bestie is hosting a fashion fundraiser event, you've got to find a cocktail dress ASAP. This has always been a daunting task for most, but can be easy if you stay focused and true to which styles look best on your body.

The key is to look chic, sophisticated and like your authentic self. Think of your personal style, but elevated. Your dress should be above the knee or at the knee. Choose your favorite color or style that makes you feel the most beautiful as well as comfortable. For me, any style that skims over my body is best for my shape. I always choose body-con dresses but in various colors and designs so it always appears fresh and new.

This is your time to shine. Have fun with your dress. Choose styles with unique cuts and embellishments. Never wear a gown (only if the invite says Black Tie or Black Tie Optional) because then you will be the "center of attention" but not in a good way. Fit and flair, body-con or A-line styles are all appropriate silhouettes for cocktail events. High heels are a must, but for some can be very uncomfortable, so opt for a kitten heel that's an inch and a half to two inches in height.

Jewelry can be bold if your dress is a simple style in one to two colors. If your dress has lots of embellishments and sequins, choose a more understated earring like studs. Don't forget to add other fun and exciting accessories like a necklace, bracelet, clutch or an over-the-shoulder handbag. Makeup and hair should always be polished according to your personal preference, try adding a manicure to keep your look cohesive.

Side note: If you are someone that doesn't like dresses at all, looking for a nicely fitted jumpsuit is a great alternative. Jumpsuits add an unexpected level of sophistication that will definitely have you standing out among the crowd. All of the advice on accessories given above still apply. Make the look yours and own it. So now you're party ready! You're comfortable and looking gorgeous. Now it's time to grab that cocktail, start a few convos and work the room.

Here's a little tip, the next time you receive that invitation don't fret. All you have to do is find your favorite casual dress style in your closet (you know the one that you always get compliments on) that looks best on you. Take a photo to refer back to when shopping. Examine the shape of the dress, then look for that same silhouette but in a better (more structured) fabrication. Don't be afraid to ask a sales professional or stylist for help when shopping in-store.
