The Best Winter Coats for Your Body

The Best Winter Coats for Your Body

If you’re anything like me cold weather makes you uncomfortable. Here in New York City winter can be brutal this time of year, with a capital B! So, I told myself I might as well get through it in style. I have been looking for a new winter coat for ages now. I finally found one that suits my long arms and inverted triangular frame.

Did you know that finding the right coat for your frame can really enhance your overall look? After all, people may not get a chance to see your fabulous outfit underneath. Your coat is just a snap shot of your personal style so why not make it memorable? When searching for the right style jacket or coat it’s all about proportions. It doesn’t matter if you’re plus-sized, tall, petite or curvy. Making the body appear proportional and balanced is key. Below, check out The Best Coats for Your Body Shape. I’ve listed what to look for in a coat after you’ve identified your body shape. Which body type do you most identify with?

Can’t find your shape? It’s possible to be a combination of any of the two shapes.

Triangle

  • look for decorative collars that create balance with hips

  • styles with shoulder pads

Hourglass

  • look for belted coats

  • any coat that follows the natural lines of the body

Oval/Apple

  • Avoid heavy fabrics that add bulk

  • waterfall coats or single-breasted styles

Rectangle

  • belted styles that create a waist

  • deconstructed styles with interesting details

Inverted Triangle

  • styles with a flared or A-line bottom to create balance with upper body

  • simple lines near the collar and shoulders

For my body shape I look for coats that add weight to the lower half of my body. I also look for belted styles that create more of an hourglass silhouette. This time around I opted for something a little more streamlined that follow the lines of my body. I found this gorgeous black funnel neck wool-mix coat for tall women by ASOS The funnel neck not only keeps me warm but the relaxed shape of the coat doesn’t bring attention to my narrow hips. Because I have extremely long arms getting a coat where the sleeves fall slightly past my wrist was a miracle in itself. I loved the functional pockets with silver zips. The silver snap buttons make it easy to put on and go. The faux leather trim around the wrist is a small detail that adds a bit of sophistication to the look.

You’ll be happy to know that this coat is available in ASOS Petite (black) and ASOS Curve (oxblood) as well.

Let me know what you all think about the coat and what coat style are you rocking this winter?
